Hajime No Ippo (The Fighting) – My Review

Makunouchi Ippo has been bullied his entire life. Constantly running errands and being beaten up by his classmates, Ippo has always dreamed of changing himself but never has the passion to act upon it. One day, in the midst of yet another bullying, Ippo is saved by Takamura Mamoru, who happens to be a boxer. Ippo faints from his injuries and is brought to Kamogawa boxing gym to recover. As he regains consciousness, he is awed and amazed at his new surroundings in the gym, though lacks the confidence to attempt anything. Takamura places a photo of Ippo’s classmate on a punching bag and forces him to punch it. It is only then that Ippo feels something stir inside him and eventually asks Takamura to train him in boxing. Thinking that Ippo does not have what it takes, Takamura gives him a task deemed impossible and gives him a one-week time limit. With a sudden desire to get stronger, for himself and his hard working mother, Ippo trains relentlessly to accomplish the task within the time limit. Thus Ippo’s journey to the top of the boxing world begins.

Dragon Ball Super – Tournament of Power Arc (Part 1)

Dragon Ball Super is an anime that debuted in the summer of 2015, which is the squeal to the hit anime Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball Super takes place in the 10-year time skip that happens between Goku killing Kid Buu with the spirit bomb and Goku fighting Uub (Majin Buu’s reincarnation).

I’m going to say this right now; this post will contain SPOILERS. So, if you don’t want this arc to be spoiled for you then I suggest you click away now, don’t worry, I understand. Have a great day!

The Tournament of Power arc (also known as the Universe Survival arc) is the fifth and final arc of the Dragon Ball Super anime. The Tournament of Power planned by Zeno begins, with eight of the twelve universes partaking—with each universe having a team of 10 fighters who battle alongside each other. The arc features continuous debuts of elites from each universe. However, this also proves to be the beginning of universal destruction. If a team has all 10 of their members eliminated, then the universe they come from will be destroyed immediately. The last universe standing gets a wish from the Super Dragon Balls (Basically the regular Dragon Balls but they are the size of a planet and they have no limit).

Now, I’m starting this by saying that this is my all-time favorite arc in Dragon Ball Super, and I’m going to explain why through each thing I talk about.

The first part of this arc is Goku find members for his team for the tournament. Of course, there is Goku will be fighting and Vegeta took some convincing because his daughter wasn’t born yet but then comes around to join but who else will there be? Goku first recruits Gohan and Piccolo, at this point Gohan is very weak from not training, so Gohan and Piccolo go and train so that Gohan can get his fighting sense back and get and for them both to get stronger for the tournament.

The next set of fighters Goku recruits is Master Roshi, and a character we haven’t seen since the Resurrection of F arc, Tien. I know what you are thinking, these characters aren’t that strong, how are they supposed to compete in a tournament against strong opponents from other universes? Well, Master Roshi is a martial arts master and start training martial arts at a young age (he is currently over 300 years old now). Tien has always been training hard and at this point in the show, he has his own martial arts school where he teaches many students. So, they are both qualified for this tournament. This brings us to six out of the 10 characters needed for the tournament.

The next fighters Goku gathers is Krillin and his wife, Android 18. While on the way to their house Goku runs into Buu, who now has a new form (skinny Buu) and agrees to fight so he can use his wish to help Mr. Satan (awwwww, cute!). Krillin and 18 agree to join the tournament so that they can keep their daughter safe. This brings our count to 9, who will be the last contestant?

While at Krillin and 18’s house Goku asks 18 if she knows where Android 17 is! At this point, we haven’t seen Android 17 since the Cell Saga of Dragon Ball Z (besides for the brief second in the kid Buu saga). This is the first time that Goku and 17 met for the first time because back in Z Goku was away when 17 was around, so they never met until this moment. Android 17 agrees to fight under the condition that his wish is that he gets a giant cruise ship so that he can use to take his family around the world on.

This makes 10 fighters for the tournament! but, in typical Dragon Ball style, something happens. Like what happened in the universe 6 arc, Buu falls asleep and won’t be awake for the tournament so Goku must find a new member.

This part of the arc surprised me because Goku got someone that no one was expecting, Goku goes and finds Fortuneteller Baba (another throwback character), and he asks her to give Frieza 24 hours on of life so he can fight in the tournament. Goku and Frieza both must fight off enemies from another universe who are trying to take out contenders before the tournament starts. Frieza agrees to fight if he gets revived after the tournament is over. Goku and Frieza get into a fight after this and both end of knocking each other out. They bring Frieza back to the group. Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Android 17, Android 18, Master Roshi, and Tien, these are the 10 participants who are fighting for the survival of Universe 7.

Just a quick side note, this tournament is supposed to be the strongest fighters across the universes fighting against each other and universe 7 found all their participants on Earth? Like, they didn’t search very hard, but I digress.

Now that universe 7 has gathered their full team for the tournament they gather together and get teleported to the world of the void, which has nothing in it besides the fighting arena. As the other 70 fighters from different universes are coming in no one is really paying much attention until universe 11 shows up. Once they show up it gives us the old school Dragon Ball Z feel when a strong enemy appears with everyone acting surprised about how strong they are, especially the leader of the universe 11 team, Jiren the Grey, the man who is said to be stronger than the universe 11 God of Destruction.

Will Goku and his friends survive this tournament? What foes will they have to face and what obstacles will they have to overcome? The tournament of power is getting ready to commence!

Another side note, the tournament is supposed to last 100 taks (42 Earth minutes) but from the start to the end of the tournament starts on episode 97 and ends on episode 131, so true Dragon Ball fashion.

This is part 1 of a 2 part post. This post I just covered some character and backstory and the next post will be all the major fights and events throughout the tournament.

Today’s question is, what is your least favorite anime/show and why?

Thank you for reading, and as always, have a great day!

Baki the Grappler – My thoughts

Baki the Grappler (Baki or Grappler Baki) is a new anime that just came out on Netflix about a week and a half ago.  From what I can tell from watching the first 3 episodes is that there is a boy named Baki (I’m guessing he is in high school), who is in extremely good shape and is very strong and he fights or wrestles people? (That’s about all I got so far from the episodes I have seen). The anime is very well animated and detailed through the main character and his opponents being very muscular and lean and it showing through the detail the of the characters physical build. The anime goes kind of old school because it shows blood and hard violence but also has moments of having 3 and even 4 levels of shading. I have honestly really enjoyed watching these past 3 episodes of this anime, the story seems really good, the animation isn’t scared to show blood (and there is a decent amount of blood and gore), the animation is very clean looking, and overall I enjoy watching it.

I can’t wait to see what happens next and I might even look into reading the manga.

Side note, I kind of want to start asking a question at the end of each post because I want to know about everyone.

This posts question! What was the first anime you ever watched and what do you think about it now?

And as always, have a great day!
